As winter winds down, it's an opportunity for us to unwind a little, to take a breath and restock before the business of the summer season starts. It's a gentle time, a simple time until Covid dropped its head in and sent New Zealand spiraling into another lockdown. And that suddenly made things very not simple.

Since then, we've been getting used to running the show remotely, with our amazing on-site staff looking after both the hostel and the guests that have been spending Level 4 with us. Here's a little look into what's been happening over the lockdown....

Lockdown

One of the first things we did once Level 4 began was to bring in the aptly-named Anti-Bored Board. This is a whiteboard open for anyone staying with us for the lockdown to offer ideas for activities to stave off boredom and to vote on their favourite suggestions. Needless to say, our staff and guests have been creative! So far, we've had games nights, movie viewings, collective meals and even dungeons and dragons. We're very lucky to have this amazing atmosphere in house at such a trying time, and as we go into Level 3, we're excited to see what else is in store!

Update on Artwork

We love the feedback we've had so far on the new artwork underway in the hostel. As the finishing touches are applied to the Taniwha mural, we're excited to share that a new ocean mural on the second floor landing has begun, designed and created by Mason Whitwell and Ikeylia Cowan.  As the artists are staying with us during lockdown, we're hoping it'll be a great new addition when we reopen our doors in Level 2. You can check out his work on his Instagram page @Masewhitty_art

Groups

Before lockdown began, we've been fortunate enough to welcome several wonderful groups from across New Zealand. These include Hastings Boys High School, St Baradene's School of Sacred Heart, St Patrick's College and more! If you've got an upcoming event, or are looking for somewhere warm and comfortable to bed down for your next trip, drop us a line at [email protected] for some great deals!

Level 2

Unfortunately, we won't be able to accommodate new guests until we're safely back at Level 2. However, our team is still on hand to help you plan and book your next trip to Rotorua. We're currently keeping our cancellation and date-changing policy as flexible as we can, so even if you are affected by changing alert levels, you'll have that peace of mind that we've got your back.

You can keep up to date with all the latest at Rock Solid by following us on Facebook, Instagram, or now on Youtube. We can't wait to see you soon!
