Sustainability

Help us care for Rotorua and New Zealand.

At Rock Solid Backpackers, we care about our home and love to show it at its best. By caring for our environment and adopting sustainable measures, we believe we can do our bit in keeping Rotorua beautiful for generations of backpackers to come.

Here's some of the things we do along our sustainable journey!

Tiaki Promise

We proudly support the Tiaki Promise and encourage our guests to respect and look after New Zealand as they travel across it.

Recycling and Food Waste

Recycling is very easy with us! Our recycling bins can be found throughout the hostel wherever something needs to be thrown out. You can also find green food-waste bins in our kitchens.

Any soft plastics we collect are sent to Auckland to be turned into fence-posts for farmers.

We also work with local suppliers to safely recycle batteries and polystyrene. Drop these off at Reception and staff will handle the rest!

We make recycling as clear and easy as possible.

Supporting Sustainable Travel

We work alongside and actively promote activity operators that give back to New Zealand. When you book your activities with us, you can be sure you're supporting some great causes!

We are also members of the Rotorua Sustainable Charter; a community of businesses that work together and share sustainable business practises.

Eco Cleaning Products

We try to buy our supplies from local sources and businesses to cut our carbon footprint down. We also select products that have a lighter footprint and don't harm our environment!

We use 100% local products!

Less Plastic

We don't use any single use plastics at Rock Solid in our cleaning products, which means less heads to landfill or into our moana - our oceans.

We added our own shampoos, conditioner and bodywash to all showers in the hostel, so you don't need to bring any extra plastic with you!

Use our shampoos and bodywash when you can!

Giving back to the community

Our team regularly heads out and collects litter from around our natural spaces, keeping it clean and tidy for visitors and nature alike.
